FORT WORTH, Texas (August 2, 2015) – Day two of qualifying in singles action continued at the 2015 Holt Jeep $10K Fort Worth Women’s Pro Circuit Event on Sunday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the campus of TCU.
Only two ranked players saw action on Sunday, with No. 1084 Veronica Miroshnichenko of Russia defeating Margo Landmann of South Africa, 6-1, 6-2 to move into the third round. The lone ranked player left to compete, No. 1008 Madeleine Kobelt of the United States, was upset by Jessica Wacnik of the United States, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Eighteen current or incoming collegiate athletes competed on Sunday from 14 different colleges. Florida sophomore and NCAA singles semifinalist Jose Kuhlman had to come back from a loss in the first set to Alexa Bortles of the United States for 6-1, 6-3 victories in the final two sets.
Meghan Kelley won the battle of incoming freshmen against Turner Yates. Kelley, who will play at Virginia in the fall, took out future Missouri player Yates, 6-2, 6-0.
Frances Altick, who won the 2015 NCAA Team Championship with Vanderbilt, had an easy road to the third round with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Taylor Gruber.
Twenty-five of the 32 remaining players hail from the United States, with the other players hailing from Norway, Russia, Samoa, Australia, Venezuela and China. Third round action will begin at 9 a.m., on the Bernard J. ‘Tut’ Bartzen Varsity Courts, with the final round of qualifying on Tuesday with the eight winners moving into the main draw bracket.
The Holt Jeep Women’s $10K USTA Pro Circuit event will be held at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the campus of TCU from Aug. 1-9. Qualifying rounds will continue until the morning of Aug. 4 and the main draw begins in the afternoon on Aug. 4. Professional athletes from around the world will be competing for $10,000 in prize money, as well as valuable WTA Tour Ranking points.
