Ranked Opponents Fall on Day One of Main Draw

FORT WORTH, Texas (August 4, 2015) – The first round of main draw singles and doubles action got under way at the 2015 Holt Jeep $10K Fort Worth Women’s Pro Circuit Event on Tuesday with at least one ranked player or duo falling in the opening round at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the campus of TCU.

The top six ranked singles player began play in the main draw on the Bernard J. ‘Tut’ Bartzen Varsity Courts, with four players coming out victorious. The No. 1 seed and No. 371 ranked Lou Brouleau of France easily handled Nazari Urbina of Mexico, 6-2, 6-1.

Seeds two and three in the singles main draw were not so lucky in the opening rounds as they both dropped their matches. No. 2 seed and No. 404 Naomi Totka of Hungary fell in straight sets to incoming freshman and No. 814 Marie Norris of the United States 7-5, 6-4. No. 3 seed and No. 473 Tori Kinard of the United States also fell in straight sets to No. 870 Brynn Boren, 6-2, 6-4.

The final three ranked players to compete finished off the first day with a win. No. 5 seed Renata Zarazua of Mexico finished off Kristina N. Smith of the United States, 6-1, 7-5, while No. 6 seed and USC senior and All-American Giuliana Olmos took care of Carolyn Xie of the United States, 6-2, 6-4.

The No. 4 seed, Zoe Hives of Australia, was faced with the task of taking on her doubles partner, Nicole Collie of Australia in the first round. Hives picked up the first set 6-3, but Collie battled back for a 6-4 win in the second set. Hives proved to have the finishing power and took the final set, 6-2, to seal the win.

Only two ranked pairs saw action of day one of the main draw for doubles, with twin sisters and the No. 3 seeded pair of Alexandra and Kat Facey of the United States battling back from a first set loss to Anna Brogan of Great Britain and Steffi Carruthers of Samoa to win their first round match, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.

The No. 4 seeded team in the main draw was not so lucky, as Norris and partner Alexandra Morozova fell to wildcards Frances Altick and Alexa Bortles of the United States, 6-7 (8), 6-4, 10-7.

The Holt Jeep Women’s $10K USTA Pro Circuit event will continue to be held at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the campus of TCU until Sunday, Aug. 9. Professional athletes from around the world will be competing for $10,000 in prize money, as well as valuable WTA Tour Ranking points.
